Never Land ☆ 无忧永不岛

本来想写点东西给Zhenghan和Xiaodan，不过看着奥斯卡颁奖半天酝酿不出情绪来。争取让写给Zhenghan和Xiaodan的文字成为09年第二篇吧。^^ (希望这个第二篇的等待时间以“天”来计算 @@)。

 

今儿就得空除个草吧。过去一年多里，很多身边朋友、从前同学的生活都发生了很多变化。令人惊喜的、令人遗憾的、令人震惊的、令人感动的，好的不好的，多少都悄悄或者明目张胆地关注，或者由别人八卦得来。小学同学Lanlan当了妈妈；初中好友Didi找到了相互有好感的男孩，却由于委员会的固执而没能通过PhD资格考试；初中室友Shirley定下了婚约；Posy找到了工作买了房；Sophie来了美国；Laomao仍旧执着；Zhu Xiao找到了Gong同学；Quexin减肥效果显著；前座Jiongjiong、室友老鼠CJ、半个同桌ZJ各自新婚；作家Wenjuan工作和感情都在几经波折之后进入平稳期；兔子遭遇戏剧性变化(兔子注意保重身体!)；Bob和小猫回到或者将要回上海；宝宝Minmin很快要成为新娘；才子Xiaoyang携美妻去了英国；Mier仍旧特立独行，毕业指日可待；师傅Lihua拿到哈佛奖学金将要来美国(师傅，俺暂时抛弃了吉他改练钢琴了)；Xiaodan在失去一个亲人的同时又将得到一个亲人，因为Zhenghan和Xiaodan经过若干年的长跑终于约定终生；大王Wenzi有了压寨先生；Yingzi回国去了上海；Xiaoxia在加拿大；aZhuan甜蜜地烦恼着；Fangxu, Farui, Jiao Yang各自成家；Liu Jia、Xiaoya在工作中不断成熟；Happen在上海出现了一下又跑去了法国；Xiaoxiong在美国惊讶地发现新菜”左宗鸡”；Cryingcat走出了过去迎接着未来；Luke终日躲在地下室(好吧，有点夸张)；Olivia空中飞人；Taitai、Qunqun带来黑帮新一代；据说Baobao也在努力；XZ落足芝加哥；LJ在加州每日账户进出上千(这年头，估计只出不进了吧…)，在以为穷途末路的时候却又柳暗花明；CC终于回到杭州一家团聚；CK&ZZ神龙见首不见尾；室友Lijuan提前毕业与男友相聚；Jazz Head J追随三水去了西雅图；Xiaohui去了香港；系友Yang Han意外离开人世；Cai Rui, Yang Yan, Zhu Zhi, Jingyi成为甘家村四大美女，其中Yang Yan还被洗了；Sharon Perl有了一个超漂亮的宝宝；小侄子天天抱着他的汽车罐子嚷嚷喜羊羊与灰太郎；妹妹去了英国；还有某某某成了(准)新娘（准）妈妈；等等等等。

 

那么借用ChenLu的一句话“我在干嘛”？去年末今年初的时候也本来想总结一下，以免过去的一年多还没体味就忘记在脑后。无奈“忙”就一个字，最后只好一缓再缓直到今天…

 

08年1月。忙着组织佛罗里达大学中国学生学者联谊会春节联欢晚会。熬夜是常事，电话不常歇。见识“各色”(此处重读强调)人等，眼界大开。由于TRB工作人员随随便便地乱扔我们辛辛苦苦写出来的文章，没能去成一年一次一尘不变永远在美国首都的TRB年会。

 

08年2月。在家过年。拍摄了人生第一次艺术照，做了人生第一次美甲，穿了耳洞(大家鄙视我土吧)。小学同学聚会。号召高一高二同学聚会，未遂。计划与作家聚会，未遂。家人聚会，甚高兴。

 

08年3月。回到甘家村。多事之月。国内冻雨雪灾达赖不消停。回到甘家村莫名其妙遭遇被疏远隔离。新课题BRUE遭遇瓶颈。借用吕小爽同学曾经的签名档(我咋老借用别人的话?)：我们要不断地开阔自己的心胸。唯一亮点：搬了新家。一室两厅宽敞明亮。

 

08年4月。关于达赖同学的争论一石激起千层浪。继续苦恼BRUE。

 

08年5月。与CJM, Xiaohui联合生日聚会。号称为了缓解CC的经济危机，买下他的电子钢琴施以人道主义救援，却买了个错误的琴架子。与Xiaodan, Zhenghan, Cai Ming, Lihui, Cao Rui同游佛罗里达(在国内地震灾难的时候我们却在欢乐，真是罪过啊)。在奥兰多迪士尼扮公主；在everglades看鳄鱼看到麻木；凌晨三点三刻在FL I-75离家仅有10迈的地方吃到人生第一张超速罚单(大家鄙视我吧)。BRUE有了进展，使劲算算例。

 

08年6月。正确的琴架子终于到手。钢琴练习遭遇首个瓶颈：跳跃音。奢侈地购入Sony 40’ 高清数字液晶电视一台。开始写边算BRUE算例，边写这个题目的论文。

 

08年7月。写完BRUE论文。为了09年不再错过TRB，开始了为期一个月的高强度灌水。居然最后还被我整了一篇论文出来, robust discrete network design。

 

08年8月。很腐败地又出去旅游了。此次与Laomao及其妈妈, Zhenghan及其父母, Xiaodan, 还有Mier同游纽约、波士顿、新港。与Mier一同鄙视Xiaodan驾车技术。当Zhenghan副驾驶紧张到手心出汗。想看望ZZ&CK夫妇以及准妈妈QQ未遂。Secretly地想看望Luke，仍未遂。回甘家村的路上第一次驾驶小货车mini-van。关注奥运会。后半月接待新生临时房客若干，幸运地认识了后半年重要的朋友和玩伴吕小爽同学。开始动笔写毕业论文。

 

08年9月。关注神州7号。宇航员梦想又开始冒泡。继续写毕业论文。CK&ZZ夫妇心血来潮地在劳动节前一周提议UF黑帮甘家村劳动节再聚首，成功说服了LJ。在阴沉的Daytona海滩假装阳光灿烂，在奥兰多度假小屋雨中烧烤。然而还是原来的黑帮在一起玩得开心，甚高兴。连夜驾车赶回甘家村以便赶上凌晨3点出发的去亚特兰大的护照换发团。路上第一次觉得开车的时间过得超慢，非有心睡着一秒惊醒。开始更加密切地关注美国总统竞选。

 

08年10月。在现有的材料下凑出毕业论文未完成版138页。大概是INFORMS了解到我年初未去成TRB的怨念，很体贴地把大会地点设置在华盛顿。不过我要说的是，10月份的DC真的比1月份漂亮很多很多很多阿。BRUE引起若干兴趣，小得意。新认识若干人，匆匆瞥见HM一眼(此人压着我的另一份关于HOT的稿件的第二轮修改稿已经整一年…)。

 

08年11月。月初毕业论文开题，没有悬念地顺利通过。继续修改BRUE文章手稿。月底投出稿件。HM终于大发慈悲将HOT修改稿转发给了审稿者。开始准备申请工作材料，比较抓狂。早就与cryingcat约好的迪士尼之行最终未遂。与吕小爽CaiMing同学血拼奥兰多13小时，购得各色白菜满满一后备箱。

 

08年12月。高密度投申请材料。评到奖学金一个。去坦帕地陪前来开会的Xiaodan，其间收到出乎意料的面试邀请一份(自我膨胀的Xiaodan认为都是他的功劳)。月底再次出游(天哪，我承认我败家)。与Zhenghan, Laomao, Sophie圣诞游新奥尔良、休斯敦和圣安东尼奥。巧遇VB。认识了超好超贤惠的杨阿姨及其一家。在休斯敦告别Zhenghan后，与Laomao, Sophie继续飞往费城。与Luke，Laomao, Sophie游普林斯顿，吃在大千美食林。新年夜坐火车再次前往纽约，与Xiaoxiong，Cryingcat在成都印象吃了年夜饭(就是所谓的大学聚会@@)。Laomao和Sophie迷路在被封锁的第五大道。吃完饭赶回princeton庆新年，蛋糕+电视+电影。与Laomao, Xiaoxiong和师妹Yan Bin游费城。

 

09年1月。旅游归来狂准备TRB一周。这次不仅去了，还做了大大小小加起来3个演讲3个海报。新认识了更多人。排队见招工委员会会长。TRB归来狂准备面试一周。飞去欧洲。人生地不熟，语言障碍。虽然结果不好，总也是经历。幸好遇到Jingming和Yanjun，面试完周六小年夜带我逛城市，晚上三人吃了芝士火锅当年夜饭。周日大年夜一个人流落在陌生的欧洲城市街头。好在天气放晴，心情也随之舒畅。错过今年的佛罗里达大学中国学生学者联谊会春节晚会。Taotao吕小爽等帮我补过了春节吃了饺子。

 

09年2月。月底另一个会议文章的截止日期。本该拼命赶工的我却花了将近一周半的时间高密度组织佛罗里达大学研究生联合会学术研讨会，还一个不落地看了格莱美和奥斯卡的颁奖。皑皑，我只想说，美国同学们效率也不是一般的低下阿… 找工作收到坏消息两个，今天又收到半个好消息一个(还不是面试啦)。现在2月还剩一星期，我要闭关赶工啦啦啦啦!!! 闭关赶工从早睡早起做起(我惭愧…)。谢谢收看。大家晚安。

 

最后首尾呼应一下，从一个星期前开始关注的Zhenghan Xiaodan婚约事件今天终于圆满地落下帷幕啦啦啦!! 偶这个新任命的maid of honor （Mier, Laomao还有另外若干不知名的申请者对不起啦!! 这个是我和Zhenghan很早以前就说好的啦!! 不过你们还是可以来当bride maid ^^ 另外帮我出谋划策...）还是很有压力和动力地!! 现在开始慢慢关注收集相关信息啦。

周六橄榄球比赛日，真不是吹的，平时开车从家到学校5分钟的路程，比赛日真真花了我一个半小时!!

皑皑，也是自己找的。等公车等到被太阳晒蔫，于是横下心来决定开车碰碰运气。结果验证了一句老话，侥幸心理还是要不得阿。艰难地爬行了一大圈，果然处处人满为患，最终不得不又开回家继续等公车...

不过只要今天球赛好看，也就值了。Go Gators!

一冲动，就买了个新电视...

Recently, I have been asked by students about "the truth in Tibet". I am
glad to see that the younger generation does care about the world today. The
nature of my job as a scholar also makes me feel obligated to promote truth
. Therefore, I decide to share the information I know with anyone who might
be interested in the subject.

To start with, let me make it very clear that I am NO expert in the field of
Tibet study -- I therefore will quote other scholars' work instead of
making assumptions. I did, however, grow up in Chengdu, a metropolitan area
that is arguably one of the closest to Tibet. I had many childhood friend
and classmates who are Tibetans, and I have traveled there when I was young.

Let me also make it very clear that the reason I write the following is not
to promote ANY political or personal agenda - I am not pro-China (as many of
my students know, I have openly criticized several issues related to today'
s China - Google censorship, piracy, etc.) and I am not pro-Tibet. I am pro-
TRUTH. I am merely speaking as a scholar who feels obligated to let the
public have as much facts as they could -- what viewpoints you decide to
take given these facts is totally up to you.

Question 1: Is Tibet Part of China?

Here is a quick summary in case you cannot wait to know:

1. In 1246, Tibet surrendered to the Mongols. This marks the incorporation
of Tibet into China (The Mongol Empire is also known as the Yuan Dynasty of
China) according to pro-China historians. Pro-Tibet historians, however,
argues that China and Tibet remain separate units in the Mongol Empire.

2. The Qing Dynasty of China declared its sovereign over Tibet from the very
beginning and has never given up its claim. It began posting two high
commissioners, or ambans, to Lhasa in 1727 and installed an administration
with troops there. Emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty was refered to as
Manjusri (titular deity) by the Tibetan records at the time.

3. During the early 1900's, China was invaded by several western countries
and was at the brink of extinction. At the time, Qing government lost its
control over Tibet (and many other provinces, for that matter). Tibet was in
a de facto state of independence as a result for several decades. This was
used frequently by pro-Tibetan scholars as the evidence that Tibet was an
indepent country before communist China. However, at no time did China ever
formally give up its sovereign claims to Tibet. (No, this is not MY claim --
this is the conclusion by Dr. Melvyn C. Goldstein & Dr. Cynthia M. Beall,
two of the most authorative researchers on Tibetan history*).

So much for History 101 :) . As you all know, history, ethnicity and
nationhood are extremely fluid topics -- anyone who is familiar with the
history of the United States and the United Kingdom could agree to that.
What really matters, in the end, is whether a country's sovereignty is LEGAL
. So here comes INTERNATIONAL LAW 101 :)

FACT: Every single country on earth (except for Britain) recognises China's
sovereignty over Tibet, and not one single country (including Britain)
recognises Tibet as an independent nation. Even during the controversial
period of 1911 - 1950 ,when China was in turmoil, most of the world,
including all of China’s neighbours, regarded China as having sovereignty
over Tibet

For example, in 1942, the U.S. State Department formally notified the
Chinese government that it had at no time raised any doubt about the Chinese
sovereignty claim over Tibet. The attitude of the United States remains
unchanged today. A report prepared for Congress in 1994 even expressed a
very explicit anti-Dharmasala position:

"Historically, the United States has acknowledged Chinese sovereignty over
Tibet. Since at least 1966, U.S. policy has explicitly recognized the
Tibetan Autonomous Region...as part of the People's Republic of China. This
long-standing policy is consistent with the view of the entire international
community, including all China's neighbours: no country recognizes Tibet as
a sovereign state. Because we do not recognize Tibet as an independent
state, the United States does not conduct diplomatic relations with the self
-styled 'Tibetan government-in-exile'".
